Lack of Basic Skills Troubles UK Companies

Many people have an opinion on the quality of schooling in this country, myself included.  But I think the bosses and HR managers of various British companies are perhaps best placed to voice an opinion on whether school leavers are able to perform in their first jobs or not.

The Confederation of British Industry has released the results of a recent survey of British companies, and I was amazed and shocked by the results.  According to the survey, 20% of the companies who were approached had ended up providing lessons in what is known as the three Rs – reading, writing and arithmetic.  These are skills that all children should have by the time they leave school and head out into the world.

But further than this I spotted another worrying trend in the children who are entering into the jobs market.  Apparently half of the businesses that were approached for the survey expressed concerns over the level of skills in reading and writing that were exhibited by those they had employed.

Clearly there is an ongoing problem here that needs to be addressed.  This is not merely one company’s opinion on the people they are employing or turning down.  This is a more widespread problem that needs to be solved in order to produce more able students at even the most basic level.

Perhaps the most notable thing I found out from this report was the fact that companies are not asking for the impossible.  They do not want fully trained people asking for jobs.  They simply want those with basic skills who can be trained in the career they want once they arrive at work.  And at present that does not seem to be happening as often as it should.
