Could Business Owners Appeal Against a Penalty Charge from HMRC?

However the Low Income Tax Reform Group has issued some advice for tax payers who have been issued with such a fine.  If this occurs and you believe you have a valid reason for missing it, you can lodge an appeal to try and get the penalty overturned.

It is important to remember though that not every penalty will be overturned.  As an accountant I would always recommend that people get their returns completed and their payments made as soon as possible.  Allowing extra time for doing so is always a good idea, in case there is some unforeseen problem or a payment doesn’t reach them on time for some reason.

There is information on the HMRC website about the process for filing tax returns and making the appropriate payments.  They also make the penalty charges very clear in all circumstances, and give example reasons why some people may be able to appeal against penalties that would otherwise be incurred.

If you have a problem with your tax return or you wish to get professional advice about any aspect of your tax situation, use the links above to get in touch with us here at St Matthew now.
